Work to prepare for your department’s written test. Find a study group and buy or borrow study materials.

Know the Requirements

Get a Physical

Firefighting is a physically demanding job. To help you be prepared for the test, start training with strength exercises to build up your muscles and begin a regular cardio program. Most states also require EMT or paramedic training to prepare you for responding to medical emergencies. These certifications will make it easier to become certified as a firefighter later in your career.

The firefighting job is a meaningful one that provides good pay and benefits. It is also safe and offers high security, as firefighters are constantly needed to respond to emergencies.
